Hervey Bay is a local government area within Queensland, part of a Federation of six States and two Territories that form the Commonwealth of Australia. Under the Constitution, the State Parliament takes responsibility for domestic affairs and shares some national responsibilities with the Commonwealth Government while the Commonwealth Government is responsible for national and international issues. The Local Government Act allows cities, towns and shires to provide a system of government to their local areas.

Every three years a Census of the people is undertaken to gather statistics for use by government and business.

Administered locally by the www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au (Municipal), many regional Queensland (State) and Commonwealth (Federal) Government offices are located in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

Information about these agencies may be located by searching Telstra White Pages or visiting their homepage. State and Federal Acts may be found by searching the Austlii database.
